Happy New Years!

Denis St. John profile
There it is, my first drawing of 2009, started it yesterday, finished it today. It's my new avatar for I Know Joe Kimpel, and will probably change my picture on this with it also. It was done with brush and ink. Then I took the cover of Monsters and Girls: Amelia number 1 and laid it under my face. Originally I was going to color my face differently, but then I thought it looked like my face was growing out of the texture. Which kind of makes sense, in a weird way, with the reality of my story.

So anyway, New Years Eve was fun, Sean Ford and Alex Kim were back in town, it was fun to see them. Now it's time to get back to life. I have a few new years resolutions, but the most important one is to double up my pages in 2009. I drew 42 finished comic pages in 2008, and I'm going to draw 84 in 2009.

Happy Holidays!

Hey all,
I'm in Silver Springs, MD for christmas, staying with my cousin Suzie and her husband Steve. I'm having a good time, Steve brews beer and I've been helping him empty a keg so he can start brewing something new. It's hard work, but as a good guest I do what I can.

I did this illustration as a submission for SuperGrrrl Adventure Comix 2 a zine put together partially by CCS freshman Jen Vaughn.
SuperGrrrl meets Mustache Man click on it to go to my flickr page and see it embiggened.
The character SuperGrrrl is (c) Rachel Edidin and Jen Vaughn. And the Mustache Man is my character, so I hold the copyright on him. This is his first appearance outside of Monsters and Girls: Amelia. Line art was done with brush and ink and color was done on photoshop.

Reviewed on Sequart

Early this month I, and a few other CCSers got reviewed by Rob Clough on Sequart.org. The reason I haven't posted about it yet is that since then sequart has been down. I don't know what happened to Sequart, and I hope it comes back online soon! So in the meantime, thanks to fellow review buddy Penina Gal, I can link to the cached version of the site. Here!

Thanks Rob, and just so I don't have a post without a picture, here you go.

Have I shown this picture before?

Anyway, it's a nice review, I think Rob "got" my comic.

Space Cow

Space Cow cover
My first Mini Comic. Put together my freshman year of high school (a copyright date of 1997) with help from my friend, John Landis.

class starts tuesday

Hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving!
I did, it was my first thanksgiving without some part of my family, but it was good, my friends became my family.
This coming tuesday is my first class at the Sharon Academy. Bryan Stone and I will be teaching a group of high schoolers comic books from now until March. I'm preparing the slide show for my first class right now, a brief personal history as it relates to comic books. It's weird to think how much comics have always been a part of my life, ever since I found a plastic Charlie Brown buried in a sandbox when I was 2.

These are my two favorite pictures from the lecture. You can't tell, but the reason I'm dressed in a suit in the second one is because I liked pretending to be Clark Kent.

New Posters

I've got a bunch of stuff to post about, A.P.E., my birthday, some stuff I forgot to blog about last month. But, instead I'm gonna post pictures. I've had a bit of writer's block, or more accurately thumbnailers block, so I've been making posters for Amelia to just keep busy and practice my brush work.
Here's one of them, based on a photo I took in a New Orleans cemetery back in 2003, I think. The original subject was of course not Amelia, but my ex, Elaine, so that makes this drawing kind of weird.

The other one is even weirder, it's not safe for a general audience, it's got boobs. so I'll just link to my Flickr! page, here

So I put together the book for A.P.E. Chapters 5 & 6
amelia&sammy
Here's a sample not from the actual chapters, but just a little piece of filler art.

pin-up_colour
This image was the black and white cover for Chapter 5 that I put together for SPX, well now it's in color! It'll be the cover along with a screen printed title.
